Authenticator Apps - What are they and how to use them

Updated: Jun 13

With MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) enabled, we have eliminated risk from certain scams that continue to target local licensees. While it's not a fun change, it was a vital change for database security.

There are a few ways to receive the "second factor" authentication code, but one stands out for being safer, faster, and easier to support: a free authenticator app on your phone.

What is an authenticator app?

An authenticator app is a free app you install on your smartphone. Once it's connected to your MLS account, it generates a fresh six-digit code every 30 seconds. When you log in, you open the app, read the current code, and type it in. That's it - no waiting on a text message or phone call with a code.

Which one do I use?

Whichever you'd like! Popular options include Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy, Duo Mobile and many more. They all do the same simple job. iPhone users on iOS 18 or later can even use the Passwords app that's already built in.

Why not just use a text message?

It is just a matter of preference. Texted codes will also get the job done, but some people prefer the stronger security of the app codes, and don't like relying on a text or call. In some cases, texts can be delayed, land in a spam or unknown-sender filter, or - in the schemes that are growing across our industry - be intercepted entirely. An authenticator app closes those gaps.

App Bonus - Extra Support

Most importantly – if you utilize an authenticator app for your MFA setup, MLS staff will have advanced options to help troubleshoot issues with you if you are ever fully locked out of your account, and cannot successfully reset your Flexmls password.

How to Set it Up

You only have to do this once. It's a simple process that takes about 2 minutes - download an app, connect it to your MLS account by scanning a QR code, and you're protected from then on.

Log in to Flexmls and navigate to Menu > My Profile

From that screen, choose Security at the bottom

You're likely already setup for a text or call - select Authenticator App from the drop down for Code Delivery and click Save.

Once you click save, a QR code will appear. Open your phone's camera and scan, then follow the prompts to enter the six digit code created by the app on your phone.

From then on, signing in is just as quick: enter your username and password, open the app, and type the current code. You can even choose to remember your device for 30 days so you're not prompted every single time on THAT device.
